Factorio Logistic Coverage: Why a Robot Can See a Chest but Still Not Complete the Job

Check network membership, chest role and the requested task before interpreting a nearby roboport as a complete logistics connection.

Factorio Logistic Coverage: Why a Robot Can See a Chest but Still Not Complete the Job

A chest can stand close to a roboport while a requested delivery never happens. The screen appears to contain everything the job needs: items, robots and a destination. What matters, however, is whether those parts belong to the right network and perform the right roles. Factorio separates logistic transport from construction tasks and shows different coverage areas around a roboport. A useful diagnosis begins by naming the task, then checking its source and destination within the actual network rather than relying on physical proximity alone.

Name the job and the robot type

Is the request to move an item between logistic chests, supply the player or build a placed ghost? These are different tasks. The official logistic-network documentation distinguishes logistic robots moving supplies from construction robots performing building and related work. A network full of one type does not automatically satisfy every job requiring the other. Identify the actual request before increasing the robot count or adding another chest.

Watch the destination's current state. A missing building, an unfilled chest request and an unavailable personal item should not all be called the same delivery failure. Inspect the relevant interface for what is requested and what the game says is missing. This narrows the next question to supply, access or task availability. A busy swarm nearby proves that robots are working on something, not necessarily that the specific job has the required resources.

Read both coverage areas and the connection between ports

The official roboport page describes a smaller logistic area and a larger construction area. A chest within the outer area is not thereby available for ordinary logistic transport. Use the overlay and the current network information rather than estimating a square's reach from memory. The task needs the appropriate coverage. This distinction is one of the most useful early checks when a layout looks connected but a chest request remains unfilled.

Roboports form a common logistic network through their logistic coverage connection. Overlapping or neighbouring construction coverage alone does not establish that shared network. Check the displayed connection and the relevant source and destination. Two close areas can be separate in the way that matters to the task. The physical flight path of a robot should not be used as a substitute for reading network membership, especially when a large factory contains several deliberately separated networks.

Choose one source and one destination to test. If they belong to different networks, decide whether the design should connect them or use another transfer arrangement. Do not join everything automatically simply because it removes the immediate distinction. Separate networks can have a purpose, and merging them can change where tasks and supplies compete. The repair should reflect the intended logistics plan rather than the assumption that the largest possible shared network is always best.

Check that the source actually offers the item

A container's contents are not enough to establish its role. Logistic chest types and settings determine how items are made available or requested. The official network documentation describes provider, storage and requester functions as distinct. Check the actual chest rather than relying only on its position in a familiar blueprint. A large stock in an ordinary container does not automatically become a supply that logistic robots can use for the chosen task.

Inspect the exact item and any relevant quality or enabled-content distinction in the active game. A request for one version of an item is not necessarily satisfied by something merely similar in name or appearance. Use the current interface to confirm what is available to that network. Avoid importing an old screenshot's assumptions into a newer configuration. The source must match the requested item as the game defines it, not just as the player remembers it.

If a network has many demands, watch whether the available supply is being used elsewhere. A request that fills briefly and empties again tells a different story from one that is never supplied. The relevant constraint can be sustained production rather than coverage. Do not solve a shortage by adding more requesters that compete for the same limited stock. Trace the supply and the demand together before changing the layout.

Inspect the destination and the robots doing the work

Confirm the request amount and whether the destination has usable space. A job may be correctly defined but unable to place another item. Then inspect robot availability and the charging situation. The official roboport information describes robots returning to charge; a large number of robots does not remove the importance of working, powered infrastructure. If tasks move slowly rather than never starting, the diagnosis may differ from a missing network connection.

Watch whether a delivery is assigned, travelling or still waiting for a resource. These states suggest different interventions. Adding a port to a place already covered may help one operating problem while doing nothing for an unavailable item. Conversely, adding production cannot fix a destination outside the required network. Keep the question specific enough that the proposed change corresponds to the observed state. The interface and a short period of observation are more useful than a guess based on overall busyness.

Test the corrected chain and preserve its purpose

After changing the suspected cause, observe the same source and destination. Does the requested item arrive and remain available under normal demand? Does the construction task complete once the required material and robot are present? A single delivery confirms part of the route, but a continuously used production area needs a longer test. Note whether another request becomes the next constraint rather than treating every new wait as evidence that nothing improved.

Keep coverage, supply and demand readable as the factory expands. A small label or clear separation can explain why a network exists and which items it is meant to serve. When adding a new roboport, check which network it will join before assuming the change is local. Factorio robot logistics becomes easier when the job is traced as a complete chain: the right task, the right robot, a supplying source, an accepting destination and the network that connects them.
